Figure Drawing

[Figure Drawing][studio class figure drawing]

This Studio in Art Foundation at Fayetteville-Manlius High School figure drawing page provides examples of student work indicative of the range of figure work students experience during the school year. While assignments between individual art teachers who may teach the course will vary, the intent and goal of students in working from the human figure is shared.

All students who are interested in developing artistic ability need first to learn to see with understanding. The human figure proves to be an ideal vehicle for assessing this perceptual development.
  • Students enhance their perception through the use of the concepts of sighting lines, using negative space, and finding relationships between and within parts of the figure (proportion).
  • Students can use the human figure to further their ability with other concepts being taught such as proportion, perspective, contour, gesture, etc.
  • Students participating as drawers and in taking turns being the model develop understanding of the anatomy and movement of the figure.
  • Guest models from among non-art students and faculty guests bring art closer to the school as a whole.

Sighting Lines is Comparing and Finding:
"Teaching Sighting Techniques involves teaching students how to use the artist's sense of implied vertical and horizontal to establish angles within a drawing. A process of comparing relationships (real or implied) within a drawing or part of a drawing.

Visual perspective wherein the distortions caused by position in space (i.e., foreshortening, etc.) are perceived and consciously or unconsciously compared against sight lines. (Vertically they are or can be referred to as plumb lines...horizontally as horizon lines)".contributed by Carolyn Coit
