Although students planning an Art sequence are encouraged to take the course as part of the 8th grade acceleration program, or in their freshmen year, we encourage students who are taking Studio in Art to satisfy the regents diploma requirement to be more flexible. Studio in Art Foundations is frequently taken by upperclassmen who have found it too difficult to work into a demanding academic schedule. There are also students who take Studio in Art on the advise of college counselors who see it as a valuable course for students heading for college majors in careers such as Architecture, Advertising, Education, Engineering, and Health.
Studio Art, as its name implies, is primarily experiential, taught in a studio setting. The year is spent completing projects designed by a qualified art instructor, certified to teach art. Within the context of the teacher directed content guidelines there is encouragement of self-expression. The work is paced to individual needs and degree of difficulty. Each art student's sketchbook becomes a extension of the studio experience - a record of student observations, application of skills outside the art room, and experiences.
