STUDIO IN ART FOUNDATIONS Grade 9 - Grade 12

Studio in Art Foundations is a comprehensive, introductory course in secondary art. The course is designed to acquaint the student of art with the scope of the entire art program. It provides the student with a range of art experiences emphasizing visual perception, the development of art skills in creating art work, knowledge of art materials and resources, responding to and analyzing works of art, understanding the cultural dimensions and contributions of art, and art history. Studio in Art courses are pre-requisites for all Art sequences. The Studio in Art Foundations meets Regents art requirement based on the New York and national learning standards for visual art education.

Although students planning an Art sequence are encouraged to take the course as part of the 8th grade acceleration program, or in their freshmen year, we encourage students who are taking Studio in Art to satisfy the regents diploma requirement to be more flexible. Studio in Art Foundations is frequently taken by upperclassmen who have found it too difficult to work into a demanding academic schedule. There are also students who take Studio in Art on the advise of college counselors who see it as a valuable course for students heading for college majors in careers such as Architecture, Advertising, Education, Engineering, and Health.

Each art student's sketchbook becomes a extension of the studio experience - a record of student observations, application of skills outside the art room, and experiences. The students are responsible for keeping their work in a portfolio (electronic and/or traditional). The creative processes are planned to develop domain specific skills of:
