The netsuke was part of customary fashion during the Edo through the Meiji Periods from 17th to early 20th Century Japan.
The drawing was done by Jeff Nishinaka, UCSB, taken from Robert O. Kinsey's Ojime: Magical Jewels of Japan, 1991.
