Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa, also known as La Gioconda in deference to the model's real name, between 1504 and 1505. Born in Florence in 1479, she was the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. The background shows his deep interest in geology. Once, the painting was stolen from the Louvre. The man who framed it borrowed a guard's uniform from his friend who worked there and took the painting to a stairwell. He removed the frame, rolled up the canvas and left with it under his shirt. He wasn't caught until he tried to sell it.

From a portrait by Berthe Morisot titled "At The Ball". Berthe Morisot was the artist I chose to work from in drawing my self portrait.
Rachel C., grade 9

From a portrait by Vermeer titled "The Girl With a Pearl Earring". Jan Vermeer was the artist I chose to work from in creating this dual self portrait/portrait using water soluble oil paints. I worked from a text which described the methods and techniques of the old masters including their color notes and color palette. It was hard to translate some of the color references but I gave it my best.
Cara W., grade 12

Titian painted the portrait of the young man titled "The Young Englishman" between 1540 and 1545. I chose this classic style to draw my self portrait. Whereas Titian worked in oils I used just colored pencils with a wide range of colors.

Jacques Louis David is the best known Neoclassic artist. In 1800, Madame Recamier asked him to do a portrait of her. But she was very "unreliable in the matter of sittings." She had also commissioned Gerard to paint her portrait, and David finally lost patience with her and told her he'd leave the portrait exactly as it was. The picture imitates antiquity, and was painted in France on canvas. It was sold in April, 1826.
Ria J., grade 9

Vincent vanGogh drew a large series of self portraits and uing oil paints as a medium. The brush strokes were long and thick. This particular portrait was done when Vincent was going through a struggle in Paris in 1887. He chose more neutral colors. This was done shorthly before he suffered from a mental breakdown. He did most of his portraits during very many phases in his lifetime, creating a different mood with each one. This one is particularly grim. Many reproductions are sold everywhere,

This painting was one of many self portraits by Frida Kahlo. Frida began painting after she was involved in a serious accident. The long recovery process allowed her to discover painting, which would become her lifelong profession. Frida's husband, Diego Rivera, was one of her biggest artistic influences and critics. In addition, she took many ideas from early Renaissance artists. Frida's paintings are characterized by her incredible attention to detail and clean, soft strokes of natural colors.

Pablo Picasso created this cubist portrait of Ambroise Vollard in 1909-1910. It was created with pencils. It is now held in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. Ambroise Vollard was one of Picasso's dealers. Cubism is a form of geometric art in which there are no curved lines, and more than one image s superimposed on top of the original. Cubism was originated by Picasso. The drawing I did was orginally by Pablo picasso. It was titled self portrait. I drew mine with a reguar drawing pencil. Picasscos was in full color, painted. When Picasso drew his, he did an abstract piece from different perspective veiw points. It was hard to try and look at my face from different view points. I have alot of respect for Mr, Picasso.

I chose to work from a portrait by James Amos porter titled "A Colonial Soldier" when I completed my self portrait using oil pastels.

This is a portrait of Durer's father that he painted in 1490. It is an oil on wood painting. The German artist Durer painted this portrait of his father in 1490. It is an oil on wood painting , and one his largest and earliest. I was drawn to the painting by it's simplicity and it's detail. Durer also did many other paintings of his family. Mostly he painted his mother and his siblings. This painting is currently held in a London Museum. This is his largest and earliest paintings of his mother, wife, and brothers. The rosary in the hands of the person sitting confirms the impression of the striking piety of his father. There are other versions of his father in an art museum in London.

Degas painted a portait of Madame Camus in 1869 with oil. She was a well known pianist. This was one of his last neoclassical Ingris-style academic works before he rebelled. He preferred the style of Manet and rebelled from the academy. Along with other such impressionist like Monet, Renior, Cezanne, and Bazille. His subjects were mainly family members. His most famous works are of dancers and cafe goers.
Lauren R., grade 9

My picture was drawn in 1881. It was drawn by Pierre-Augustine Renoir. My picture is of a girl with a blue hat. He was a late impressionist artist. He tended to focus on natural looking scenes with beaytiful landscapes, contented families, cheerful dancers and sun drenched settings. Renoir worked particularly close with Monet.
Tiffany G., grade 9,

Diego Rivera is most famous for his expansive and politically radical murals. He is know as the Father of Mexican Art; (and no, he is not me when I'm older). One of the things that you should notice about these portraits is that I only added color to the inside of the glasses and left the rest of the face black and white. My idea was to have the viewer only see color through the lenses. I added a more vibrant color to Diego's glasses than mine to resemble that Diego is an older, more experienced artist than me. .

Henri Matisse was a french artist and painter born in LeCateau in 1869, and painted The Green Stripe which was the portrait of Madame Matisse which I chose to work with. The painting was done in 1905 and is an oil painting on canvas. Mtisse was the leader of a group of painters known as the "Fauvists". Matisse was a master in the use of color and form, his paintings convey emotion and expression and invite the viewer into his world of art.
Shannon C., grade 9

I chose to work from a detail of the self portrait by M. C. Escher titled "Hand With Reflecting Sphere" in which the artist is holding a spherical object at arms length. His face is in the center reflected on the surface of the shiny metallic or glass sphere. The rest of the room appears curved to fit the sphere. Escher's is from an etching, when I completed my self portrait I used pencil.
Michael D., grade 9

My portrait was painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1868. The woman is Summe- Lisa. The original painting is in the Staatlich Museum PreuBischer Kulturbesitz, Nationalgallerie, Berlin, Germany. The oil painting is 35x27 inches, though my drawing is 18x12 inches.
Ruth P., grade 9,

This is a piece by Norman Rockwell. It is one of his exceptions because he felt most successful at capturing the world of boys. There is a movie star's picture on the girls knees and she's studying herself in the mirror. He captured the feeling of a time passing. The doll cast aside tells us the phase of the girls life is almost over. Rockwell was at his creative peak when he made this. It is an oil paint on canvas. March,6 1954 In her bedroom.
Gretchen K, grade 9

Roy Lichtenstein was born in 1923 in New York. He is considered the greatest artist of the Pop Art movement along with Andy Warhol. He grew up under no specific art influence but attended an art class at age 14. He was drafted into the army and when he returned Lichtenstein studied at Ohio State University. Roy Lichtenstein died in 1997.
Katie G., grade 9

The drawing I did was by Norman Rockwell. It's title was "Discovering Santa". This portrait was completed December 29, 1956. Norman Rockwell has drawn everything from traditional Santa Claus subjects to documentary treatment of Chicago's Union Station during the Christmas rush. On a cover in 1956 that appeared 4 days after christmas, he showed another young boy-he seems to be about seven years old-exploring his father's bottom drawer, where he finds a santa suit pat away in mothballs for the following year. This time disilluision is complete. This was one of Rockwell's favorites.
Jody L. K., grade 12

I chose to work from a portrait by Hans Memling when I drew my self portrait.
Elise N., grade 10

The drawing I did was of an oil on panel piece. It was a self portrait done by Albrecht Durer it was called self portrait in a fur coat. He was a German artist who lived from 1471-1528. He made this piece at the age of 28. Durer altered his own physical features slightly, he made his eyes appear a little larger and made his portrait resemble the european conception of Christ. His painting was done in Munich.
Tim F., grade 10

This painting was by Paul Gaugin. He was a contemporary artist with a unique style. He did this self-portrait on canvas with oil. He was a unique artist and this sef-portrait is a big part of his collection.
Brian S., grade 9

The painting is called "Head of a Man" by Delacroix. The person who Delacroix painted was Gericault this was in Italy in 1818. The reason why he wanted to paint a head of a man was because that was similar to Raphel's style. The reason I think that Delacroix painted Gericault was because Gericault created the famous painting called "The Raft of the Medusa".
Emily W., grade 9

Marc Chagall made this self-portrait when the war and revolution was going on in Russia. In this portrait Chagall emphasizes the feminine features of his face. He sought to avoid the draft. Marc Chagall was strongly influenced by the portraits of Titian. I chose to work from a self-portrait by Marc Chagall that was painted in 1914. Whereas Chagall worked in oils, I used graphite.
Brian M., grade 9

This picture is the cover illustration for the Ladies' Home Journal, July 1921. The artist is Maud Tousey Fangel. Fangel had a special knack of drawing and painting babies that was both artistic and extremely appealing. Because she always insisted on drawing directly from life, her pictures reveal an extra insight and understanding of baby characteristics that chould only have been gained in this way. Much of her work was done in pastels, appropriate to her subjects in range of color and softness of texture.
Michelle R., grade 10

Lila Cabot Perry drew the Old cobbler in 1923 with oil on canvas in Pennsylvania. This painting was give to the National museum of Women in the arts, by Liz Lyon. Mrs Perry was very much into impressionism, as were many other artist at the time. I think this was an excellent illustration, solid and detailed.
Christophe M.

Paul Klee, 1879 to 1940, was a Swiss-German painter. He was influenced by many different art styles in his work just as I was influenced by his style, including expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. The painting I researched was titled Senecio, a self portrait of himself.

Portrait by Pablo Picasso - by Katie D.

M.C. Escher is a Dutch graphic artist who is most recognized for his incredible techniques in woodcutting, lithography, spatial illusions, the most impossible buildings, and repeating geometric patterns. M.C. Escher was also a greatly appreciated and respected mathematician, crystallographer, and scientist. Escher creates unique and intricate images filling up all the space in his drawings, which always require a "second look". He first started working with graphics at the age of 15 in 1913, and then began to do more and more complex works. His works are all very impressive and fun to look at. Drawing by Victoria A., grade 9

This painting by Georges Rouault was completed in 1926. His style of art was considered fauvism. Fauvism means beastly and Rouault's painting are dark and foreboding. His most famous collection of paintings is called Miserere. He was a devout Catholic so his subjects often contained religious figures. Georges Rouault was greatly encouraged and inspired by his grandfather, and began drawing as a child.
