Earlier this school year, Norbert J. Buskey, a band director at Fayetteville-Manlius, passed away. The FM bands are planning a tribute concert on Tuesday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Norm's wife Judy will be in attendance, as well as his daughter Shari. We would like to have as many alumni at the concert as possible, and we would also like to do a grand finale that would include both current and former band members (a Sousa march of course!). Please send an e-mail if you are able to attend and/or play. If you can't come, please consider sending a brief memory that we can include in a book to present to the family. Norm impacted many young lives at FM- we would love to show our appreciation to the family by having as many alumni there as possible. Please pass the word- we do have a Facebook page- Fayetteville-Manlius High School Bands- if you would like to respond that way.

I am looking for information about any Class of 1974 reunion. Thanks!

Deb (Brown) Travers:

From Norman Maywright:
Hi..I'm heading up our 45th class reunion and we are trying to verify what year Rikki Solow graduated from. I think it was in 1968 but I live out of the country now and don't have access to my yearbooks.

Also we may be opening this to the class of 68 & 70, so we will keep you all posted on our plans.

Otherwise save this date... May 31, 2014. More info to follow. Or write me!

Norm Or if you remember me better as Mouse!

I was wondering if anyone knew where Betsy Higgins, Class of 1974, was??? She was a good friend and I would love to reconnect.

Thanks - Holly Jones Biegel

I am trying to locate Miss Korczac...5th grade teacher at pleasant Street school in 1974-1975.

She truly was my favorite teacher. I have thought of her over the years, and would love to be able to get in touch with her. I am a teacher today, partly because of the influence of this special teacher!

1973 Reunion -- If I have to run this, it will be in Seattle. Greetings to all!

Charles Wilson

Open request to all F-M alumni: I am in the process of writing a book on the traditions at F-M. I need your help with a few items. I am looking for “Anything Showboat.” Tickets, programs and perhaps pictures. I don’t want to keep any of your items unless you no longer want them, and I will eventually donate them to the Fayetteville Free Library’s historical collection; copies of items or sharp, clear pictures will do fine. I am also looking for copies of school newspapers such as The Hornet’s Nest, The Sting, The Fist, or The Buzz. The perfect issue would be the first of each paper but any will actually suffice. Any other items “F-M” will be considered and you will get credit for all submissions. Contact me at and I will advise you further. Thank you, Kerry Rose, F-M Class of 1962.

Class of 1987 now has a Facebook page with the beginnings of reunion information!

If you attended F-M when Mr. Rhoades was the music teacher, you know what a tremendous person he was. Most students today would not know, but Mr. Rhoades was the one responsible for writing F-M's alma mater. While his students found the words,  Mr.Rhoades provided the musical tune which is known as "Aura Lee" and was in 1956 the same tune used by Elvis Pressley for his song, "Love Me Tender." ~Kerry Rose

Long-time Fayetteville-Manlius music teacher Charles "Dick" Rhoades passed away on Dec. 27, 2011. Pictured with Dick are his wife Aleene and daughter Cindy on their 75th wedding anniversary in May 2010.

Charles Richard Rhoades, 97, of Center Conway, formerly of Plant City, Florida, ended his earthly journey on December 27, 2011. Born May 17, 1914 in Napoli, New York, Dick is survived by his wife of 76 years, Aleene, their daughter, Cindy Russell and husband, Brett, five grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Jo A. Trowbridge and her husband Jay.

Dick and his wife Aleene, spent a lifetime in New York State where he was a public school music educator. He taught in high school music departments from Cattaraugus and Oneida, to Malone and ending in Fayetteville-Manlius. Subsequently, he was the founder and head of the music department at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York in its early years.

In 1970, Dick and Aleene retired to Florida where Dick became involved as the music department head at Hillsborough College near Tampa before taking his second retirement. Dick continued to keep music in his life by directing the Men’s Chorus at Country Meadows, Plant City, Florida until he was 93. In 2008, they made Center Conway their permanent home.

For the past three years, Dick and Aleene have been served well by a staff of caring and loving home care givers. The family is especially grateful for the care provided by the devoted staff as well as Steve Dexter from Visiting Nurses, and their primary care provider, Geraldine Lau, MSN, ARNP. The continued support of many individuals has given Dick and Aleene the opportunity to remain in their own home where they enjoyed their family and friends and many activities.

Mr. Rhoades began a long career in music education when he was graduated from the State Normal School of the University System of the State of New York, at Fredonia in 1937. He earned his Master of Science degree from Ithaca College, 1951.

Dick was eulogized by his teaching colleague in Syracuse, as a ‘can do’ guy who could always get the job done! He will be remembered by all who knew him as an outgoing, friendly conversationalist who was always ready with a good story!

The following observations about Dick’s professional and private life were made in a letter of recommendation to his second career as an administrator of the music department at Hillsboro Community College in Tampa, Florida. “Mr. Rhoades is especially fitted to teacher education. He works unusually well with others of all age brackets … He likes people and has the patience to bring them out and especially so with young people. He is the type of man accustomed to working with strong people in his area and in bonding a good rapport between the Arts and the other educational areas. His wife is a charming person also dedicated to Mr. Rhoades’ activities and ideals. . . The man’s sense of humor is refreshing. . . All in all he is an unusual fellow who relates in the classroom, from an office of administration, and off campus. . . He makes a good golf partner, too, but plays this line as a true dubber…”

Dick was a multi-faceted man with a wealth of handyman skills including building everything from grandfather clocks and curio cabinets to the family’s camping trailer. In addition, he was a composer and enjoyed playing his own individual jazz style of hits from the 30’s and 40’s on the piano.

A service celebrating Dick's long and full life will be scheduled at the pleasure of the family in the spring.

F-M Class of 1982's Comments:
It is with a heavy heart that we must share some bad news about our classmate, Lisa Dudley. Lisa was found deceased in Pennsylvania on December 26th 2007. As you may know, we profiled her on our website
from the date of launch at the request of her sister Kirsten Dudley.

Lisa went missing in September of 2007 after Lisa’s truck was found abandoned in Las Vegas, Nevada. The circumstances of her death are still not completely known and so we ask that you come back to the site often for updates. Because of the circumstances, Lisa’s memorial service will be announced at a later date. Kirsten has indicated that she will be holding it at Green Lakes State Park, Lisa’s favorite place, as soon as it is feasible.

For those of you who remember, Lisa was a very quiet sweet and peaceful person who grew up in Fayetteville. She went to Fayetteville-Elementary, Wellwood and F-M High School. For a short time she went to Bishop Grimes but came back to F-M to graduate in 1982. For those of you who remember her sister Kirsten and her brother Rob, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. We will most certainly keep you in the ’82 family and the F-M Family up to date as this tragic story unfolds.

There are many details yet to be released and we will update as you as soon as possible. Right now, if you would like, please go to the website and log into the blog under Lisa’s Video and enter your thoughts. You may also e-mail Lisa’s sister Kirsten Dudley at

Class of 77 website is still up and running.
