Surrealism like Sandy Skoglund

October 2008

Lesson developed and taught by Mrs. Julie Gratien


   Students learned about surrealism through examining Sandy Skoglund's installations and photographs. They learned that surreal may appear real at first, by actually has a more dreamlike quality. Students enjoyed Skoglund's creative use of art materials, including popcorn and Cheese Doodles! They recognized the surrealistic characteristics of her work and identified the real objects, sculptural objects, and humans in the installations.

   Students were then challenged to "make a picture surreal." They started with a picture of an animal and added a background and details that certainly couldn't be real! They made turtles fly, zebra's drinking from the kitchen sink, pigs  surfing, and more!    Enjoy the results!

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Squares like Vasarely

October 2008

  Students examined how Victor Vasarely's created an optical illusion by using just squares. The work reminded them of tunnels, hallways, the inside of a pyramid, and more! Students were challenged to create an interesting arrangement using only colored squares.

Butterflies

Fall 2008

Lesson developed and taught by Mrs. Julie Gratien


   Students learned about monarch butterflies during a science unit. They received butterfly eggs that hatched into caterpillars, then turned into  pupa and eventually emerged as butterflies. They released their butterflies, who made their flight to Mexico.
    In celebration of this experience, students learned how to stencil butterflies in the art room. They first created an interesting sky-like background by overlapping and pasting tissue paper onto a white background. They learned to draw and cut symmetrical butterfly shapes into 2 different stencils. They worked together to stencil their butterflies with black paint and added designs to their butterflies in a symmetrical fashion.

Olympic Medals

Fall 2008

Lesson developed and taught by Mrs. Julie Gratien


   Students learned about the art that was made especially for the recent Beijing Olympics. They viewed images of the Olympic logos, the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube arenas, the Olympic torches, and the mascots. They learned how artists used some traditional Chinese styles as well as more modern design.
 
Mrs. Gratien showed students a bulletin board and a PowerPoint presentation about the art of the Beijing Olympic
   Students were inspired by the sports logos and chose one to include on an Olympic-style medal. They used Model Magic clay and metallic paint to make their work special.

Drawing Flowers like Georgia O'Keeffe

Spring 2008

Lesson taught by Mrs. Julie Gratien

    Students viewed a video about an American painter, Georgia O'Keeffe. They learned about her life, the inspiration for her work and her unique style. O'Keeffe's close-ups of flowers inspired each student to carefully observe a flower and draw it as if it was very close-up. Students reviewed blending techniques with oil pastels and created these colorful images.

Self-Portraits

    Students used mirrors and careful observation to draw their self-portraits. They tried to imitate the shapes of their features, the color of their eyes and hair, and textures to make their drawings more realistic. They made sure their backgrounds helped make their faces stand out.

Textured Whale Compositions

Spring 2008

    Students learned about the scientific characteristics of whales. In art class, they carefully observed the outer shapes of whales, dolphins and sharks. They practiced drawing the mammals using contour line methods. They traced their drawings onto larger paper, making sure they overlapped to create a sense of space. Lastly, they added layers of colorful textures to enliven their pictures.

Clay Whales

Spring 2008

Lesson developed and taught by Mrs. Julie Gratien

    After carefully observing and drawing whales, dolphins, and sharks, students were then challenged to form one out of clay. They began by preparing the clay and forming it into a cylindrical shape. They made a few cuts and used their fingers to form the details specific for their mammal. After the clay was fired in the kiln, the students painted their work. Some students chose natural colors, while others used brighter colors and patterns.

Realistic Drawings of Birds

Spring 2008

    Students observed photographs of birds and drew the birds realistically. They learned drawing techniques that helped imitate the shape, colors and textures of the birds . By setting the birds in natural environments, they look especially life-like.

Symmetrical Weavings

Winter 2007-08
Lesson developed and taught by Mrs. Julie Gratien
    Students learned about traditional Mexican weaving. They viewed the DVD  titled 'The Village of Textiles' featuring the Vasquez family. They learned how the family members work together to prepare and make yarn, dye the wool, prepare the warp, and weave ancient and modern patterns on a large loom. Students created a basic paper weaving and used geometric shapes arranged symmetrically. Once the weavings were laminated, students added fringe to complete their work.

Patterned Animals
Winter 2007-08

   Students viewed the video Oaxacan Woodcarvings featuring Mexican carver Zeny Fuentes. They also examined two carvings by the artist and photographs of carvings by other Mexican Folk artists. These artists carve figures and animals from the wood of the copal tree. They decorate the animals in brightly painted patterns. Students used toy animals as models for their painted animals, then added colorful patterns to enhance their work.

Papel Picado
December 2007

     Mexican parties are called fiestas. Folk artists in Mexico often create paper cuttings that are strung in a row and hung as decorations at their fiestas. You might find these tissue paper cuttings, called papel picado, at birthday, Day of the Dead, and Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Students learned how to fold and cut the tissue paper using a variety of shapes and sizes to create their own festive paper cuttings. Their work was hung in a row, bringing color to the school hallways.

Mosaic Masks

Fall 2007

Lesson developed and taught by Mrs. Julie Gratien

    Students examined an Aztec mask of Quetzalcoatl. This mask was made of small turquoise tiles and shell. Made over 600 years ago, this mask was important to the beliefs of the Aztec community. Students used small paper squares to adorn their paper masks. They added facial features and were creative by twisting, curling, braiding, or spiking the hair.

Goldfish Bowls

Fall 2007

Lesson developed and taught by Miss Jessica Cortese

    Students learned the physical characteristics of goldfish. They learned to identify the fins, gills and colors. Students were challenged to draw live goldfish from observation. They drew a bowl for their goldfish and covered it with clear cellophane to represent the glass. They cut out the bowl, invented a setting and combined the two.

Monarch Butterflies

Fall 2007

Miss Jessica Cortese

    Students learned about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. They hatched butterflies and released them in time to migrate to Mexico. In art class, they practiced symmetry, shape and color to create an enlarged version of a monarch butterfly. Oil pastels showed up well on black paper.
