The Fayetteville-Manlius School District wants to make sure its students know the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

On April 19 and 20, F-M High School junior and senior students participated in the “Every 15 Minutes” DWI prevention program. The national program educates students on the risks of drinking and driving as well as texting and driving. The program’s title refers to the statistic that every 15 minutes, someone in the United States dies as a result of an alcohol-related accident.

The school district partnered with the Manlius Police Department and the Manlius Fire Department for the event.

On Thursday, April 19, about 60 pre-selected junior and senior students wore Every 15 Minutes t-shirts and white face makeup, representing those who die as a result of an alcohol-related accident every 15 minutes. They did not speak during the school day unless it was necessary in class.

During the afternoon, junior and senior students were dismissed to the student parking lot near F-M High School House I for a mock accident. Following the accident, the “victims” went to various locations to be filmed and then joined the rest of the 60 students who were involved in the program throughout the day for an overnight retreat.

On Friday, April 20, all junior and senior students took part in an assembly based on the previous day’s events. They watched a video of the previous day’s events and talked about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

On Monday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m. the Manlius Fire Department will be hosting in the high school auditorium a community viewing of the Every 15 Minutes video that was shown to all junior and senior students during the April 20 assembly.
