Elementary school chess club excels at local competitions

May 11, 2017: Several Mott Road Elementary School students are earning top honors for lining up their kings and queens.

So far this year, the Fayetteville-Manlius elementary school’s 11-member chess club has participated in five local tournaments where students competed for top individual and team scores.

The team is comprised of first-grader Marcel Mari; second-graders John Catalino, Aidan Lautz, and Matthew Vitas; third-graders Timothy Amoako, Hudson Brenner, Jack Calnon, Samuel Dupras, and Josiah Feng; and fourth-graders Matthew Botas and Michael Vitas.

The team participated in the following tournaments:

  • Dewitt Rotary Scholastic Open - team champion;
  • 2016 Ed Smith Central New York Fall Scholastic Chess Championship - first place;
  • 2016 Holiday Festival - third place;
  • 2017 Donlin Scholastic Chess Open - third place; and
  • Onondaga County Scholastics - second place

The team is coached by Bob Nasiff.
