The theme for the 2009 Manlius Library Summer Mural was The Creative Arts. The students had studied figure drawing and portraiture during the school year in different art projects. This large group project was an excellent culminating year-end activity that used the student's prior knowledge of drawing from observation and techniques and skills used in painting. Each student in 3rd grade selected a visual image of a person in a pose approriate to the activitiy and theme in each of the murals. They created sketches from which the composition of each mural was created. All the 3rd grade students helped to paint the murals. Each mural was created and painted by one of the six 3rd grade classes.
