Creating – Students learn basic skills necessary to create artwork and combine them with their own ideas to develop, create and refine their artistic work. Students are exposed to a variety of materials, techniques and concepts.

Presenting – Students learn how to title, select and prepare their artwork for display and to share their art with the community. Display locations vary, but may include school hallways, bulletin boards and cafeterias. Artwork is also showcased at school open house events or arts nights. Selected artwork may also be displayed at other locations by invitation.

Responding – Students learn how to respond to professional artists’, their peers’ and their own work to interpret intent and meaning using appropriate art vocabulary. Students learn to describe, compare, categorize and analyze artistic work. Students may respond to an artist’s work as inspiration for an art making lesson. They also learn to reflect on their own art making experience through group discussions or writing.

Connecting- Students learn how to connect to art based on their own knowledge and experiences. They investigate how an artist’s work is often made in the context of the time and place including culture, traditions and history.
