What can YOU do to help make your band get better faster?
- Be on time for rehearsals - with your instrument (in good working condition), music, and pencil READY TO WORK! Remember that band will meet every other day (Even days), so don't forget your instruments! If you are not sure if you have band or a lesson, bring your instrument.
- There can be no talking out of turn in rehearsal. This is a large band and it becomes frustrating for everyone when students socialize or talk out of turn. Everyone needs to agree on this.
- NO Gum, Food, or Beverages in the band room – EVER!
- Practice. Practicing is like homework. You have to practice to improve your skills.
- Respect the conductor, music, instruments, facility, and your fellow musicians - we are all part of the team. Ask what YOU can do to help.
- Listen. When your section is not being rehearsed, quietly look over your music - fingering through your parts, figuring out rhythms, etc., and LISTEN. A major responsibility of being in a performing ensemble is to listen to the other parts, listen to the conductor - LISTEN TO EVERYTHING. This is also extremely important when we listen to recorded pieces and playbacks of our own rehearsals/concerts.
- Attitude, Attitude, Attitude. Musical groups need to have an atmosphere of support, respect, and enthusiasm. We all need to feel safe to express ourselves through our music, and we need to feel safe to make mistakes and learn from them. There can be no negative attitudes.
- Communicate - if you have anything to say, please talk to me. The last thing I want is for someone to be unhappy in a situation that could easily be fixed with a simple conversation.
- Practice your parts. The performers and the audience enjoy music the most when we are having fun. Performing is much more fun when we are confident about our own skills as well as the skills of the band as a whole. In other words, PRACTICE! Be prepared on YOUR individual parts so we can spend our time together enjoying it and making it musical!
