| All eighth graders will take the NYS ELA exam on April . . This three day test (approx. 90 minutes per day) consists of: Day One: 7 reading passages followed by 39 multiple choice questions. Day Two: 1 listening section followed by 5 multiple choice and 3 short response questions as well as an essay. 2 paired reading passages followed by 13 multiple choice questions. Day Three: 2 paired reading passages followed by 4 short answer questions and an essay. The tests are scored regionally by teachers from F-M, Cazenovia, ESM, J-D and Canastota school districts. Scores from the separate parts of the test are compiled by New York State. Each student is given a final score from 1-4. A score of 3 or 4 is passing; a score of 1 or 2 is failing. While ELA scores are not used as report card or exam grades, a student's performance may be considered for ninth grade scheduling. Typically, students who do not pass this exam will be placed in writing lab in the high school. |
