District to conduct student climate survey for grades 5-12

Fayetteville-Manlius School District students in grades 5-12 will have the opportunity to participate in a confidential survey to gauge students’ perceptions of the school climate.

During the week of May 15, participating students will complete a questionnaire that prompts them to evaluate their perspective of school engagement, safety and environment.

This survey will help district officials evaluate the school environment, which is one of the priority area initiatives of the district’s strategic plan as directed by the board of education.

A link to access the survey via a secure online portal will be sent to student’s F-M school email accounts. A designated time will be established for students to complete the survey in school. Students who are not in attendance during in-school survey administration and wish to complete the questionnaire, may access and complete the survey at their leisure using a laptop or mobile device.

The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete for students in grade 5-8 and approximately 15 minutes for students in grades 9-12. Additional questions regarding stress factors will be asked of students in grades 9-12.

The district has partnered with Research & Marketing Strategies (RMS), a third-party area market research firm, to administer the survey. Responses are confidential and anonymous.

Students are encouraged (but not required) to participate in the survey.

A final report of the survey results from RMS is expected in June. The report will be shared with the district’s Community Relations Committee (CRC) and then with the board of education at a regularly-scheduled meeting.

A sample copy of the survey questions is available online or may be requested by contacting Ms. Sarah Gridley at the Fayetteville-Manlius District Office at 315-692-1200 or by email at sgridley@fmschools.org.
