F-M students earn National German Exam medals

Eight Fayetteville-Manlius School District eighth-graders recently achieved top honors for their work on this year’s National German Exam.

Administered each year to more than 26,000 students, the National German Exam, which is organized by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG), measures a student’s ability to read, write and communicate with cultural competence. Exam results provide teachers with a means of comparing students in all regions of the country, as well as programmatic data that helps inform curricular decisions.

Wellwood Middle School eighth-graders Lucas Gascon, Amanda GroesbeckJoshua LimTerese SchmidtBenjamin Sharples and Ella Theoharis each earned a gold medal on the exam, and Maya McKenzie and Wren Usiatynski earned bronze medals. The students study under the advisement of F-M German teacher Kristin Dodds.

Founded in 1926, AATG represents German teachers of all instruction levels and is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of teaching the language, literature and culture of German-speaking countries, according to the AATG website.
