District begins updated lead testing

The Fayetteville-Manlius School District started its next round of district-wide water testing, checking outlets used for drinking and cooking to make sure they comply with New York State’s requirements for lead in drinking water. NYS districts are required to test all buildings by December, 2025.

F-M began its building tests in May with Fayetteville Elementary, Mott Road, and Enders Road. The district will complete its testing at Wellwood, Eagle Hill and F-M High School between September and December.

The state established an action level of 15 micrograms of lead per liter, typically referred to as “parts per billion (ppb).” If a sample from a water outlet exceeds this level, schools must take steps to prevent the use of the outlet for drinking or cooking purposes until it is remediated and follow-up testing confirms it is no longer above the action level.

Fixtures recently tested at our elementary buildings consisted of faucets, drinking fountains/bottle filler stations, and ice machines. No fixtures contained excess levels of lead at either Mott Road or Enders Road elementary schools. At Fayetteville Elementary School, one classroom sink came back with a slightly elevated level of lead. That sink will be replaced, and in the meantime, signage has been placed indicating that it is not to be used for water consumption.
