District receives high marks for safety and security following audits

The Fayetteville-Manlius School District is being commended for the safety and security improvements it’s implemented in recent years.

In spring 2023, two safety and security audits were conducted to evaluate the district’s physical security, as well as policies and practices related to safety, security and emergency preparedness.

Security firms True Security Design in Suffolk County and Crisis Leadership Preparedness Solutions (CLPS) in Westchester County, each conducted full audits of the district, focusing on emergency preparation, communications, and management.

At its August meeting, the F-M Board of Education was presented with an overview of the audit findings by Joseph Pangaro of True Security and Matt Miraglia of CLPS.

“What’s most impressive is that the district takes an assertive and proactive approach to safety and security. Since the last audit, the district has significantly enhanced its safety and security posture,” said Miraglia.

Safety and security audits were previously completed in 2018 and at the recommendation of the district’s Facilities Committee, are conducted every 5 years.

Since 2018, the district has added additional security cameras, expanded its School Information and Resource Officer (SIRO) and Special Patrol Officer (SPO) program, and established controlled access points both in and out of all buildings with secure vestibule areas for visitor screening.

“I’m pleasantly surprised by the improvements the district has implemented. Your district is safe and has done the right things,” said Pangaro. “I can tell you as a father, not just as a law enforcement and security personnel, your district is safe. I would have my children go here.”

The final written report of the audits also included recommendations for the district, such as enhancing emergency communication capabilities, implementing an early intervention and prevention program, and establishing a “best practices” policy to enhance the district’s existing safety and security policies.

The report will be used to assist district leaders make strategic safety improvements moving forward as the district maintains its commitment to providing a safe and secure work environment for all students and employees.
