June 3, 2025 Update
Eagle Hill Middle School student Anika Das earned second place at the New York State National Civics Bee competition.
The competition, modeled on traditional spelling and geography bees, gives students the chance to win recognition and earn cash prizes by sharing ideas for improving their communities and showing their enthusiasm for civics.
The NYS Competition featured three rounds, two of which were civics-based quick questions. The five highest-scoring students from the first two rounds moved onto round three, which included questions from a panel of judges regarding the finalists’ essay submissions.
Anika was awarded a $500 check for her efforts. Congratulations, Anika!
An Eagle Hill Middle School student is headed to the New York State Finals for the National Civics Bee after winning the regional competition in March.
Anika Das participated in the National Civics Bee Regional at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica, taking home a first place win. The competition consisted of multiple choice civics questions. To qualify, students first had to submit a written essay proposing ideas to improve their community.
National Civics Bee gives students in grade 6-8 the opportunity to explore issues that matter to their communities, and give them further understanding of civic engagement. The goal is to cultivate responsible citizenship.
Anika, along with two other students who placed in the regional competition, will now move onto the New York State Finals for the National Civics Bee, which will take place in Albany on May 30. Students from around the state will compete to represent New York in the national competition. A $1,000 cash prize is also on the line.
Congratulations to Anika, and good luck in the state finals!
