F-M student-athletes compete in local Special Olympics

On Thursday, May 18, 40 Fayetteville-Manlius students competed in the Special Olympics at Cicero-North Syracuse (C-NS) High School Athletic Complex.

A Parade of Athletes kickstarted the celebration and was followed by a full day of athletic competitions which included running, jumping, and throwing. F-M students came prepared for friendly competition, having trained with our occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and physical education staff for their events.

The day was a true testament to the spirit of inclusion, with F-M students joining more than 500 other student-athletes in area school districts including Chittenango, Fabius Pompey, Jamesville-DeWitt, Lyncourt, Marcellus, North Syracuse, OCM BOCES, Solvay, Westhill, and West Genesee.

To support our student-athletes, we also had a number of students volunteer and assist at the event, as well as prior to the games, Wellwood students enrolled in the Agents of Change class sold Special Olympics t-shirts as a fundraiser. Students, staff, and community members were encouraged to wear them in celebration of the competition.

It was such an inspirational and fun-filled day. Thank you to our special education staff who worked hard to support our students, and congratulations to all of our Olympians for their hard work and determination!
