F-M teams advance to Regional Battle of the Books

Fayetteville-Manlius students recently battled it out in the district’s annual Battle of the Books tournament to see who would advance to the regional round.

Battle of the Books is a reading competition organized by the OCM BOCES School Library Systems. The primary goal is to foster a love of reading, increase reading comprehension, and promote academic achievement and teamwork.

Students work in teams to read and study a set of eight books over the course of the school year. Teams then compete in building and district-level trivia battles, answering Jeopardy-like questions to demonstrate their knowledge of the books. The top performers then move on to regional and super regional competitions.

District Battle Results

For the first time, a Fayetteville-Manlius elementary school participated in the battle. The winning team from Enders Road Elementary has advanced to the regionals.

Another first for the district, F-M will send three teams to compete at the regional level for grades 5/6. An Eagle Hill team tied with two Wellwood teams following a tie breaker round in the district battle. The rules state that if teams are tied after all tie breaker questions, all teams advance.

For grades 7/8, teams competed virtually from their school libraries. Team 4 at Wellwood Middle School finished in first place and will move on to regionals.
