NYSSMA journal publishes article by F-M music teacher


The latest issue of the New York State School Music Association’s School Music News journal features an article by F-M Instrumental Music Teacher John Jeanneret.

In the article, “Unleashing Creative Musicians: Why Every Student Should Improvise in Jazz Band,” Jeanneret explains how prioritizing spontaneous expression can develop deeper musicianship, confidence and listening skills.

Some of his key points explain how improvisation builds music literacy and aural skills, promotes creativity and student voice, and supports equity and inclusion in jazz. He concludes that teaching improvisation ensures jazz remains a living art form, transforming students from mere performers into lifelong creators.
