Board’s Eye View: A message from the F-M Board of Education

The following message was included in the Sept. 2022 publication of the district newsletter, F-M News.

While the start of each school year brings with it many new opportunities for our district, the F-M Board of Education is mindful of the commitments that we made last year regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and making the F-M district a more welcoming place for all of our students, families and staff members.

In May, the board adopted an equity policy that directs the district to establish a DEI committee and ensure that curriculum and instructional materials for all grades reflect a range of perspectives and experiences. The district will soon solicit interest in DEI committee membership. Information will be shared on the district website on how to be involved.

In June, the board amended the district mission statement to include an emphasis on diversity. The new statement will be displayed throughout the district to remind everyone of our values.

Emotional health will continue to be at the forefront of our work. We receive regular updates from the administration about what actions and initiatives are underway to support the well-being of our students and staff. The district is committed to communicating more frequently on this topic to build awareness of how we can help our students struggling with emotional issues.

We expanded our counseling services team by adding two new family-school liaisons who will work across the district with students and their families. The district recently partnered with Contact Community Services to hire a mental health educator to work with staff and students.

We look forward to the beginning stages of the F-M High School capital project that voters authorized last year. This project will transform our high school into a cohesive, state-of-the-art facility, and our students will benefit from this project for many years to come.

We support the district’s vision of being a school community that inspires students and promotes personal success. We will set our 2022-23 goals in collaboration with the district to best support its strategic plan.

So while we look forward to the new school year and what it brings, we remain steadfast in continuing to address the needs identified in our school community during the last school year. We look forward to collaborating with our students and their families as well as district staff and community members to face these and any new challenges that come our way.

Please come to a school board meeting or use the district’s Let’s Talk online communications platform to ask questions or raise concerns. Our district reflects our community, so please be active and engaged. It is when we work together that we are at our best. Best wishes for a great new year!
